To serve at the altar, as to sing in the choir, next to the priesthood is the highest privilege a layman can enjoy.
In centuries past, it was only the priest and those ordained to the Office of Acolyte who were allowed to cross the threshold of the communion rail to assist at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, as the order of acolyte was and is a step toward the priesthood. However, as would often happen many who served as acolytes as seminarians would eventually be ordained priests resulting in a shortage of acolytes to continue the sacred service. Holy Mother Church, in her wisdom, has since allowed for lay men and boys to perform the duties of the office. Therefore we do our best to train and educate altar servers to properly execute these sacred duties for our good and the greater glory of God.
