On Sunday, September 22nd at 2:30 pm, following the 12:30 pm Latin Mass, Schola Cantorum Director Rob Lappa will offer a one hour workshop on Gregorian Chant.
The focus of the workshop will be understanding the neums used in chant notation as well as the modern notation often found in hymnals. In addition to the responses like "Amen" and "Et Cum Spiritu Tuo", the congregation is also encouraged to sing the Ordinaries of the Mass and various hymns like "Salve Regina", "Ave Verum" and "Ubi Caritas.
In the decades following Sacrosanctum Concilium, the use of Latin and chants nearly disappeared and where it did stay in use, various styles and interpretations on how to sing chant developed. Even though the practices of how to sing chant often differed or were forgotten, even years before Vatican II, this brief workshop will bring to light some standard practices and will hopefully allow more of the congregation to know where and how to sing so that we are more unified in our musical worship.
In the meantime, please visit cameratamusic.com and click on the link for Schola Cantorum. You will find many useful resources there including recordings of the many of the chants that we sing that will allow you to listen, practice and learn more about the history and practice of the Church's great tradition of sacred music.
